Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni highlighted the importance of discipline within the military, citing both exemplary and chaotic figures in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
In a post shared by the Kaguta Foundation, Museveni named former army commanders Mugisha Muntu, Aronda Nyakairima, and Sande Mukulu as examples of good and disciplined soldiers.
Their leadership and adherence to military conduct were acknowledged as crucial qualities that contribute to the army’s effectiveness. However, Museveni also pointed out that while former UPDF officer Henry Tumukunde had commendable qualities, he was often perceived as “chaotic.”
This distinction underscores the president’s perspective that even within the ranks of disciplined individuals, there can be contrasting behaviors that affect overall military cohesion.
Museveni emphasized the importance of recognizing the positive attributes in soldiers, stating, “Gen. Yoweri is always looking for the positive side of you.”
This statement reflects his approach to leadership and mentorship, aiming to foster a supportive environment within the military. The remarks come at a time when the Ugandan military faces scrutiny regarding discipline and conduct among its ranks.
By publicly naming both commendable and chaotic figures, Museveni seems to be encouraging a culture of accountability and discipline within the UPDF, reminding soldiers of the values that underpin their service to the nation.
As the military continues to play a vital role in Uganda’s security landscape, Museveni’s emphasis on discipline may be a call to strengthen the ranks further.
