“Unknown People Are Following Me And Want To Kill Me” LoP Ssenyonyi Cries Out – Speaker Among Says Ssenyonyi Is Drunk
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has brushed aside concerns regarding assassination attempts on Leader of the Opposition (LOP) Joel Ssenyonyi, asserting that there is no credible motive for anyone to target his life.
This response came after Peter Mugema, MP for Iganga Municipality, raised concerns on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.Mugema informed Parliament about Ssenyonyi’s claim that his life was in danger and that there were potential assassination plots against him.
LOP Joel Ssenyonyi stated on Tuesday that he had faced intimidation due to his efforts in exposing corruption and alleged plans to orchestrate accidents to end his life.
“We will not stay silent. They have tried to intimidate us in various ways, including planning accidents. Our faith protects us, and we will not be intimidated,” he declared. “This is a message to those plotting against us: all your efforts are futile.”Ssenyonyi made these statements as his party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), welcomed new members at its headquarters in Makerere Kavule.
However, Speaker Among dismissed the death threats, advising Ssenyonyi to report any genuine threats to the police.
“Let’s not engage in theatrics. If there is a genuine threat, report it to the police. Who would want to assassinate someone and for what purpose? Let’s refrain from making such claims,” she remarked.
Among suggested that if such concerns were raised in a bar, it might be dismissed as alcohol-induced talk.
“If such claims were made in a bar, it might be attributed to alcohol consumption. In my view, these matters should not even be brought up here because assassination is not how we operate. No one holds enough importance to warrant such extreme measures,” she emphasized.
LOP Joel Ssenyonyi has garnered public support for his crusade against corruption in government, particularly for his role in exposing issues at Uganda Airlines during his tenure as chairman of COSASE.
He continues to receive acclaim for his outspokenness against the misuse of public funds in Parliament, including criticism directed at Speaker Among and the Parliamentary Commission for granting his predecessor, Mathias Mpuuga, UGX 500 million as a token of appreciation for his services.
