In an exclusive interview with theGrapevine news site, Twahira Akandida, wife of Muhammad Ssegirinya, the Kawempe North legislator, confirmed reports that her mother-in-law prevented her from seeing her husband in the hospital.

She disclosed that ever since her husband was moved to Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, she has been unable to visit him in person, relying solely on phone conversations and media updates to monitor his health.

“I used to receive updates about his condition from his brother Bbosa Kasaga and occasionally spoke with my mother-in-law,” Twahira stated.

Reports suggest that while Ssegirinya has been linked to multiple women, Twahira has consistently supported him, particularly during his two-year detention on charges of murder, attempted murder, and terrorism.

When reached for comment, Ssegirinya’s mother, Justine Nakajumba, acknowledged restricting access to her son by other women due to concerns for his safety.

“You understand my son’s position as a politician; he has numerous adversaries who could exploit those women. Moreover, he has not formally wed them; they are only mothers to his children,” Nakajumba explained.

She emphasized that, as his mother, she possesses a unique understanding of Ssegirinya’s needs, and he finds solace in their conversations and assistance with his medication.Nakajumba advised the women with Ssegirinya’s children to stay updated on his health status through phone communication.

Since his release from prison in 2022, Ssegirinya has been frequently hospitalized both locally and abroad, with the Ugandan government covering his medical expenses.

Ssegirinya’s Personal Assistant, Alex Luwemba, who recently returned from the hospital, told Uganda Radio Network (URN) that his boss can now speak, eat, walk, and recognize visitors, a significant improvement from his condition when he was admitted on December 23rd, 2023.

PA Luwemba however added that, “Ssegirinya continues to battle multiple organ complications and requires prayers for a complete recovery.”

Luwemba revealed this to URN during a court session at the International Crimes Division of the High Court, where Ssegirinya and his Makindye West counterpart, Aloysius Allan Ssewanyana, along with four others, are facing charges of terrorism.

The legislators, along with Jackson Kanyike, John Mugerwa, Bull Wamala, and Mike Sserwadda, are accused of terrorism, murder, and attempted murder in connection with machete killings in the greater Masaka District in 2021.

The court session aimed to provide an update on Ssegirinya’s health condition and determine if Lawyer Geoffrey Turyamusiima, representing one of the accused persons, Mike Serwadda, had filed an application seeking to dismiss the charges against his client on grounds of torture.

However, proceedings were postponed due to the absence of Pre-trial Judge Alice Komuhangi Khauka. Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana have two separate cases arising from the machete killings, with another murder case pending before the Masaka High Court.
