President Museveni emphasized the importance of prioritizing the politics of interest for the prosperity of Ugandans during the closure of the Transformational Leadership Development Course at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi. Speaking to 472 district leaders, Museveni highlighted the significance of correctly diagnosing the country’s challenges, pointing out historical instances of misdiagnosis leading to problems after independence in 1962.
Reflecting on Uganda’s past, he stressed the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) role in diagnosing the nation’s issues accurately and implementing four core principles: Patriotism, Pan-Africanism, socio-economic transformation, and democracy. Museveni underlined the need to move beyond identity-based politics, advocating for patriotism and collaboration to address common challenges.
Using examples from his own region, Museveni illustrated the importance of a broader market, advocating Pan-Africanism to ensure Uganda’s prosperity. He highlighted the success of initiatives like wealth creation and “ekibaro,” resulting in surplus production of milk and maize, emphasizing the necessity of external markets.
Addressing socio-economic transformation, Museveni urged leaders to promote wealth creation and free education. He emphasized a holistic approach to agriculture through the four-acre model, combining coffee, fruits, pasture, food crops, and backyard activities like poultry and fish farming.
The President also stressed the significance of democracy, promising support for leaders by considering the establishment of a SACCO. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja shared that the training addressed issues identified during meetings with local leaders and residents, emphasizing the need for ideological orientation.
Furthermore, Nabbanja directed the Minister of Health to upgrade Kyankwanzi Health Center II to III for improved local health services. The Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, assured leaders that the merging of Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) would not affect road operations. He encouraged leaders to use the allocated funds to work on district roads and announced future provision of graders for road rehabilitations.
Brig. Gen. Charles Kisembo, the Director of NALI, commended the participants for gaining knowledge in ideology, leadership, time management, patriotism studies, and other relevant subjects. He expressed confidence in their enhanced performance and mobilization skills for government program implementation. Kisembo also praised Prime Minister Nabbanja for successfully mobilizing a large number of participants and recognized NALI’s role in training Ugandans for socio-economic transformation.
