President Yoweri Museveni was taken aback when traders confronted him, shouting and attempting to leave the Kololo Independence Grounds while he was still speaking. However, Special Forces Command (SFC) Commandos intervened, forcing them to return to their seats and listen to the President’s address.

SFC Commandos told the traders that they had come to listen to the President and should wait until he finishes speaking. One by one, they were forced to return to their seats. Dr. Kizza Besigye, Museveni’s 1981 war comrade and political competitor, noted that it was the first time in many years that Museveni had been publicly embarrassed by civilians.

What happened at Kololo was not accidental but a planned move that was foiled by SFC Commandos. Highly placed sources within traders’ leadership revealed that a section of traders’ leadership had held a private meeting at the Kampala Acarders Traders Association (KATA) offices, chaired by Godfrey Katongole.Others in attendance included Moses Lwegaba, John Kabanda, and representatives from the Kampala New Generation Traders Association and the Federation of Uganda Traders Association.

The meeting aimed to strategize on countering submissions by Dr. Thaddeus Musoke Nagenda, chairperson of Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA), and his Secretary Isa Ssekito. They suspected KACITA of diverting the President from addressing real issues by praising him.

Before the meeting started, Kabanda was questioned about his secret relationship with Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) senior minister Hajjat Minsa Kabanda. Kabanda denied allegations of working with their enemies. The traders’ leadership became suspicious of Kabanda when he supported Minister Minsa in a heated meeting at Hotel African. They accused him of being bribed by landlords who supported his lavish wedding. The meeting ended in fighting, and Minister Minsa was saved by her security.

In the Tuesday meeting, Kabanda assured fellow traders’ leadership that he was with them, and a decision was taken to inform members on their WhatsApp groups to storm out of the meeting if Museveni didn’t ban the use of EFRIS.

However, SFC Commandos foiled the move. Before Museveni addressed the traders, some leaders exposed Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja Musafire and Junior Minister Evelyn Anite, declaring them a mafia who takes fake investors to President Museveni. They accused the investors of facilitating smuggling.

Minister Minsa was forced off the microphone due to shouting from traders.Sources said ministers were embarrassed before their boss because traders have information that they are sealing deals with KACITA leadership, costing common traders.

Traders warned President Museveni, ministers, and MPs that if their issues aren’t solved, they’ll stand against them or support opponents in coming elections.Democratic Party’s Richard Ssebamala, Bukoto Central MP, warned President Museveni to be careful with traders’ issues, as they have not involved themselves in political issues during elections but have now been pushed to take action.
