Following exclusive information alleging President Museveni’s financial backing of Patrick Oboi Amuriat’s 2021 presidential campaigns, the once robust Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) experienced a bitter schism last year.

The division left Amuriat, Nandala Mafabi, and Jack Sabiiti stationed in Najjanankumbi, while another faction, led by Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Ssemuju Nganda, Mubarak Munyagwa, Chairman Waswa Birigwa, and Salaam Musumba, along with numerous MPs, sought refuge at Besigye’s Katonga Road office, where they conduct their political activities.

However, reconciliation between the factions seems distant. The FDC Katonga faction initiated nationwide consultative meetings, commencing from Kireka, the first meeting in Kampala, and extending to Jinja, Mbarara, Rukungiri, Kasese, with more ongoing.

Through these consultations and rallies, members overwhelmingly advocate for the FDC Katonga faction to establish a new political party ahead of the 2026 general election.

They argue that Amuriat, Nandala, and Sabiiti should remain with the dwindling FDC at Katonga, as members gear up for a mass migration to the new political entity being devised by Besigye and his allies.

Speaking to a local TV station in Kampala, Jack Sabiiti, the current FDC Chairman of the Najjanankumbi faction, disclosed plans to launch an investigation into Besigye’s funding sources, suspecting Museveni’s involvement in financing Besigye’s extensive rallies.

“A former leader of our party going outside the rules of the party, giving instructions, using money that we don’t know where it’s coming from. This is now the time to say maybe he’s getting the money from Museveni”-Jack Sabiiti Said.

This comes at a time when Najjanankumbi through Amuriat are threatening to sue Besigye for continuing to use the party’s symbols and other gears without authorization
