Top Story!! Why NUP Is The Reason To Be Blamed For Canadian Gov’t Recalling Ambassador Joy Ruth Aceng
The recent recall of Ambassador Joy Ruth Aceng from Canada has sparked intense debate on social media, with many questioning the circumstances surrounding her departure.
Aceng, who has served in Ottawa for eight years, has been a steadfast representative of Uganda’s interests, achieving notable successes in her role. However, her troubles began when Uganda enacted the Anti-Homosexuality Act in 2023, prompting the Canadian government to summon her.
Despite warnings to tone down her stance, Aceng, with the support of Kampala, refused to back down. She even alerted the Canadian government to NUP supporters using fake homosexual claims to secure visas, which angered the NUP faction. Sources reveal that President Museveni had sanctioned Aceng’s transfer to another first-world country due to the deteriorating Uganda-Canada relationship, but the process was delayed under unclear circumstances.
Heads are now rolling at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as President Museveni demands explanations for the delay. The NUP stalwarts in Ottawa had previously disrupted a Diaspora gathering convened by Aceng, causing commotions and provoking her. However, she successfully neutralized their mission with the help of Canadian security officials.
Following the incident, NUP supporters hatched strategies to further provoke Aceng, but Kampala was aware of their plans. When they were blocked from interrupting a pro-Museveni ceremony in Ottawa, President Museveni congratulated Aceng and summoned her for a meeting to counter the radical groups.
The Canadian government reportedly demanded Aceng’s recall after her engagements with the NUP group, citing her warnings against fake homosexual claims and her open praise for the ruling party and President. Throughout her tenure, Aceng prioritized trade, investments, and mobilizing Ugandans in Diaspora to invest back home. Her additional roles as head of mission in the Bahamas were added by President Museveni a few months ago.
The circumstances surrounding Aceng’s recall raise questions about diplomatic relations, political pressure, and the role of ambassadors in representing their countries’ interests abroad. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Uganda and Canada will navigate this diplomatic challenge.
