Top Story!! NRM’s Speaker Anita Among Breaks Her Silence Regarding Arrest Of Kizza Besigye, See What She Ordered
Parliament was engulfed in intense debates and political tension yesterday as Speaker Anita Among faced relentless questioning from Members of Parliament (MPs) from the National Unity Platform (NUP). They demanded accountability for the controversial and dramatic arrest of former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya.
According to Parliament Watch, the Speaker, clearly shaken by the barrage of accusations, instructed the government to provide a full statement next week explaining the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction of Besigye and Kamulegeya in Kenya.
The two were reportedly kidnapped in a secretive operation while attending a book launch hosted by former Kenyan Justice Minister, Martha Karua. They later appeared in Uganda’s Military Court Martial, sparking outrage and raising questions across the region.
The uproar in the House began when Ssemujju Nganda, MP for Kira Municipality, accused the government of brazenly violating international law. “How can Uganda justify carrying out covert operations in another country, abducting opposition figures, and bringing them before a military court?” he demanded, his voice reverberating throughout the chamber.
The government benches were silent, which only increased the Speaker’s frustration as she struggled to manage the growing discontent.
NUP MPs, sensing an opportunity, seized the moment to press further on why Besigye, a prominent opposition leader and advocate for the newly formed People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), was subjected to such treatment.
Initially, Among tried to downplay the issue, suggesting the need for further “consultation.” However, her hesitation only fueled the opposition’s resolve, and she was eventually forced to agree to their demand for an official government explanation.
“This is a matter of both national and international significance,” Nganda declared, his voice full of conviction. “The people deserve answers!”
As the session concluded, it became clear that this incident would dominate political discussions in Uganda for the foreseeable future, with Parliament set for an explosive session next week.
