Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, has stirred widespread debate following a controversial statement he shared on Twitter, warning against any plots targeting his father.
In a tweet posted recently, Muhoozi declared, “If anyone even thinks about killing my father, our Hero, Mzee, we shall hang him or her with no apologies!”
The remark has sparked heated discussions online, with critics raising concerns about its implications for Uganda’s justice system, rule of law, and freedom of expression.
Known for frequently using social media to voice his opinions on political and personal matters, Muhoozi followed up with another tweet expressing gratitude to Jesus Christ and praising his uncle, Afande Saleh, a senior military figure. He wrote, “I thank my God Jesus Christ that He made My father a Muhima! I thank Him for Afande Saleh.”
Opposition groups and civil society organizations have condemned the statements, describing them as an attempt to silence dissent and intimidate critics. Members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) have highlighted the remarks as evidence of growing human rights concerns and the centralization of power within the ruling family.
On the other hand, Muhoozi’s supporters view his words as a demonstration of loyalty and a strong commitment to protecting his father, who has led Uganda since 1986.
As Uganda moves closer to the 2026 general elections, Muhoozi’s statements add fuel to an already charged political atmosphere, raising further questions about the nation’s leadership and democratic trajectory.
