In a bold move, National Unity Platform (NUP) party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has thrown down the gauntlet, challenging President Yoweri Museveni to put his money where his mouth is.
Bobi Wine has dared Museveni to waive his presidential immunity in writing, paving the way for a court showdown over the contentious 2021 presidential election results.
In a scathing letter dated September 15, Bobi Wine asserts that his party has concrete evidence of Museveni’s alleged election rigging, contradicting the president’s claims that NUP was responsible for manipulating the results by one million votes. The NUP leader is calling Museveni’s bluff, inviting him to meet in court and settle the dispute once and for all.
But that’s not all – Bobi Wine has also proposed an independent, transparent election audit, presided over by an international agency, to get to the bottom of the alleged election irregularities. He has gone a step further, stating that if the audit finds NUP guilty of rigging, they should face prosecution. Conversely, if the audit reveals that Museveni was the mastermind behind the rigging, he should step down and allow the people of Uganda to choose their leader.
This latest development comes on the heels of Museveni’s claims last week, during a thanksgiving service for the late General Aronda Nyakairima, that he had irrefutable evidence of NUP’s alleged vote rigging. Museveni boasted that he was ready to testify in court, armed with evidence that would prove NUP’s culpability.
However, Bobi Wine remains unfazed, maintaining that Museveni’s claims are nothing more than a smokescreen to deflect attention from his own alleged wrongdoing. The 2021 presidential election results, which saw Museveni emerge victorious with over 6 million votes, while Bobi Wine trailed behind with over 3 million votes, have been shrouded in controversy, with many questioning the legitimacy of the outcome.
As the political temperature continues to rise, one thing is certain – the people of Uganda are eagerly waiting to see how this saga unfolds. Will Museveni take Bobi Wine up on his challenge, or will he retreat behind the shield of presidential immunity? Only time will tell.
