Ugandan activist Dr. Kizza Besigye has raised concerns about the alleged dress code of UPDF (Uganda People’s Defence Force) soldiers. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Besigye shared an image of a UPDF soldier wearing sandals and questioned whether the army still enforces its dress regulations.
Besigye wrote, Does the UPDF still have Army Dress Regulations/ Dress Code? I am concerned about the institution in which I once served!”
The post sparked mixed reactions from Ugandans, with some offering different perspectives:
- Ruhima Jonah commented, “You’re a doctor and, most importantly, a human expected to have empathy! You mean you don’t understand that people can be sick and unable to wear shoes, or are you suggesting they should follow traditions at the expense of their health?”
- Besigye responded, “In the military, every office has a second-in-command (2i-c). If the designated officer cannot perform a duty or assignment, the 2i-c steps in.”
- Aisha remarked, “There’s that one soldier who looks like he’s wearing sandals. In such positions, you’d think they’d focus more on their footwear, forgetting about steel-toe boots or proper dress code. And of course, those who think they know everything will start schooling you.”
- Lowlings commented, “Stop taking things so seriously, doctor. I see you’re always in your hoodie. Is that the dress code for doctors?”
