Uganda’s Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, has issued a rallying cry to Ugandan men to join the fight against gender-based violence (GBV).

In a passionate address, Ssenyonyi emphasized the need to shield victims from further harm and scrutiny, rather than perpetuating their suffering.

He stressed that both the government and society must prioritize supporting survivors, creating a safe space for them to share their stories and seek justice. Ssenyonyi urged men to introspect and take responsibility for their actions, recognizing their critical role in protecting women.

“As men, it’s our duty to safeguard the women in our lives and communities,” he asserted. “We must confront our own behaviors and attitudes, ensuring we’re part of the solution, not the problem.”

Ssenyonyi also proposed a fitting tribute to the late Sgt. Rebecca Cheptegei, Uganda’s sports icon. He suggested renaming a sports facility in her honor, acknowledging her tireless dedication and remarkable achievements.

Rebecca Cheptegei’s legacy extends beyond her athletic prowess; her patriotism and commitment to Uganda inspired a nation. As President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s government continues to develop policies aimed at reducing violence, Ssenyonyi’s influence underscores the urgent need for enhanced protection, support, and recognition of women’s rights in Uganda.
