Ugandan Children Take a Stand Against Child Marriage and Teenage Pregnancies

In a powerful display of determination and unity, students from various primary and secondary schools in Uganda gathered at Bulange, Mengo, to tackle the pressing issues of child marriage and teenage pregnancies.

The event, themed “Children and Cultural Leaders United to End Child Marriage, Teenage Pregnancies And Promote Education,” was organized by Touch the Heart Uganda and Girls Not Brides Uganda, in partnership with Child Fund Uganda, She Leads, and the Buganda Kingdom.

The chief guest, Owek Katikiiro Charles Peter Mayiga, Prime Minister of the Buganda Kingdom, graced the occasion, emphasizing the kingdom’s commitment to ending child marriage and promoting education. The event provided a platform for students to engage in debates and presentations, sharing their perspectives on possible solutions to these challenges.

During the debates and presentations, the children showcased their knowledge and passion for creating change. They emphasized the importance of education in preventing child marriage and teenage pregnancies, citing it as a critical factor in empowering girls.

Child Marriage: Solutions from the Children

The students presented comprehensive solutions to address child marriage, advocating for:

  1. Enforcement of the Legal Minimum Marriage Age: The children stressed the need for strict enforcement of the legal minimum marriage age of 18, highlighting the importance of protecting girls from early marriages.
  2. Educational and Community Programs: They emphasized the significance of educational and community programs that teach families about the importance of girls’ education in preventing child marriage.
  3. Collaboration with Religious and Cultural Leaders: The students recognized the crucial role of religious and cultural leaders in shifting societal perceptions and promoting positive change.

Preventing Teenage Pregnancies: A Comprehensive Approach

The children also presented innovative solutions to prevent teenage pregnancies, including:

  1. Comprehensive Reproductive Health Education: They advocated for comprehensive reproductive health education in schools, empowering girls with knowledge to make informed decisions.
  2. Safe Spaces for Girls: The students emphasized the need for safe spaces where girls can access information and support, reducing the risk of teenage pregnancies.
  3. Policies Supporting Young Mothers: They proposed policies that allow young mothers to return to school, reducing the likelihood of dropping out and promoting continued education.

The event organizers, Touch the Heart Uganda and Girls Not Brides Uganda, have been working tirelessly to promote education and prevent child marriage. Their efforts are part of a broader national campaign to prevent rape, teenage pregnancy, and child marriage, and to promote positive parenting.The success of this event demonstrates the power of collaboration and the importance of involving children and cultural leaders in the conversation.

By working together, Uganda can make significant strides in ending child marriage and promoting education, ultimately creating a better future for its children.
