In a sermon at Canan Land, Pastor Aloysius Bugingo of House of Prayer Ministries urged his congregation to vote for President Yoweri Museveni in the upcoming 2026 general elections, highlighting the importance of religious freedom in Uganda.

Bugingo praised the government for allowing Ugandans the freedom to worship without hindrance, saying, “We have freedom of worship; we can praise and even spend the night in our churches without any issues!” He expressed his belief that such freedoms should continue under Museveni’s leadership.

The pastor also raised concerns about local authorities he believes are unfairly targeting places of worship, pointing out that while some churches are being demolished, other religious sites, such as shrines, are being spared. “The fountain of honour can protect religious institutions, but an LC chairperson can order the demolition of a church!” he noted.

In an interesting addition, Bugingo encouraged his followers to support Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Museveni’s son, as a potential successor when Museveni retires. This comment feeds into ongoing speculation about Gen. Muhoozi’s future presidential ambitions.

Bugingo’s endorsement comes amid growing criticism of President Museveni from political opponents, who accuse him of campaigning prematurely, as well as concerns about the grooming of his son for a future leadership role.

As the 2026 election approaches, Pastor Bugingo’s remarks underscore the influence of religious leaders in Uganda’s political discourse, illustrating the ongoing intersection of religion and politics in the country.
