Ten Ugandans Die In An Accident Along Tororo-Iganga Road

A tragic incident unfolded on Monday night along the Iganga-Tororo highway, claiming the lives of at least ten individuals, as reported by the authorities.

The victims of this grim collision encompassed not only the drivers of a commuter taxi, whose perilous overtaking allegedly triggered the mishap but also a tanker operator. The fateful event transpired near the Kibimba bridge around 7:30 pm and involved a total of six vehicles, among them heavy goods trucks.

The array of motor vehicles involved in the incident comprised license plates such as KBJ 156C/ZD 2621 (Mercedes Benz Actros), KDY 526G/ZD4391 (Mercedes Benz Axor), KDH 407T (Toyota Land Cruiser), UAV 597N (Toyota Hiace), UAW 963M (Toyota Hiace), and KAE 254C/ZA 5971 (Tanker loaded with molasses).

According to preliminary findings by the police, all five motor vehicles were traveling in the same direction, with the exception of the molasses-loaded tanker, registration KAE 254C/ZA5971, which was headed towards Iganga from the opposite direction.

The unfortunate sequence of events unfolded when motor vehicle number UAW 963M Toyota Hiace attempted to overtake a line of vehicles. In an attempt to avoid a possible head-on collision with the oncoming tanker, the driver swerved to the left, unknowingly exposing the taxi to the trailer tanker.

In a statement, Traffic Police revealed, “He swerved to his left to give way not realizing that the oncoming vehicle was a trailer tanker loaded with molasses.” The rear section of the trailer collided with the taxi, propelling it against another trailer, KBJ 155C/ZD2621 Benz Actros. The tanker lost control, overturned, and erupted in flames. Tragically, ten individuals, including eight taxi passengers, the taxi driver, and the tanker driver, lost their lives at the scene.

Authorities promptly transported all the deceased to Bugiri Hospital mortuary, while the involved motor vehicles were towed to Muwayo Police Station. This somber incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of road safety and responsible driving practices.
