At Mpoma Satellite station along the Mukono-Kayunga road, tragedy struck when Lt Cpl Kundo Obedi, a 30-year-old soldier and student at Uganda Military Engineering College (UMEC) in Lugazi town, Buikwe District, lost his life in a collision involving the motorcycle he was riding and a Toyota Gaia driven by Egyptian national Abdel Muhassen Kamal. The fatal incident occurred as Lt Cpl Kundo Obedi attempted to overtake two vehicles on his motorcycle, RA 229084.
Regrettably, the collision led to the immediate demise of Lt Cpl Kundo Obedi and inflicted severe injuries upon the two passengers accompanying him. The injured individuals were promptly transported to Kawolo and Naggalama hospitals for medical attention, while the soldier’s body was conveyed to Bombo military hospital. Both involved vehicles were subsequently towed to the Mukono police yard.
This tragic occurrence serves as a poignant reminder for all road users to exercise utmost caution and consideration for others. Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Mr Patrick Onyango, stressed the imperative of heightened awareness regarding road safety.
Zooming out to a broader perspective, the most recent traffic accident report, as of July 2023, paints a disconcerting picture with 432 registered crashes. Among these incidents, 97 were classified as fatal, 202 as serious, and 133 as minor. The fatalities included 42 individuals on motorcycles, comprising 13 passengers and 29 riders, in addition to 40 pedestrians.
These alarming statistics underscore the urgent need to advocate for road safety measures and instill a sense of collective responsibility among all road users. Preventing such tragic incidents in the future requires a concerted effort from the community to prioritize safety on our roads.
