Speaker Anita Among’s announcement to run for the position of Vice National Chairperson Female in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has sent ripples through the party, marking a significant moment in Uganda’s political landscape.

Her decision has garnered strong support from Members of Parliament (MPs), who see her candidacy as a vital step for revitalizing the party’s leadership.

Supporters of Among argue that it is time for the older generation, including former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga, to step aside and create opportunities for new leadership.

Prominent MPs, such as Solomon Silwanyi and Sanon Bwire of Kaliro, have openly endorsed Among’s bid, describing it as a timely and democratic shift.

They point out that the Vice National Chairperson Female role was never a permanent position for Kadaga and that the party requires new leadership to secure its future.

“Anita is not running against Kadaga. The position is not tied to one individual,” Bwire said, underscoring the importance of generational change within the NRM.

While some have called for Kadaga to retire with dignity, there are concerns that Among’s campaign may face challenges or conflict.

The possibility of a rivalry has also raised questions about Kadaga’s future role in NRM leadership. As the internal elections draw closer, it remains uncertain whether Kadaga will officially announce her candidacy or step down, making room for a new leadership chapter within the party.

Among’s candidacy has undeniably sparked important discussions about leadership transition and its potential impact on the evolution of the NRM.
