On November 22, 2024, National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Bobi Wine expressed his solidarity with Olivia Lutaaya, who was recently released after spending four years in prison. Lutaaya, a former political detainee, was among the 19 individuals pardoned by President Yoweri Museveni.
In a statement shared on X, Bobi Wine celebrated Lutaaya’s return, praising her resilience despite the unlawful detention she endured. “What a joy to receive you back, comrade Olivia Lutaaya! You spent four years in illegal detention without trial, yet you remain strong and committed to the fight for a better Uganda,” Bobi Wine wrote.
Lutaaya’s arrest in 2020 occurred amid a crackdown on opposition members and activists, with many, including Bobi Wine, condemning her detention as unlawful due to the absence of formal charges or a trial.
In his message, Bobi Wine reiterated his firm belief that justice will prevail. He vowed that, though the journey to accountability may be long, President Museveni and his regime will eventually face consequences for their crimes against the Ugandan people. “It may take time, but I am confident that Museveni and his criminal regime will answer for every injustice committed against our citizens,” he stated.
