NUP MPs Vow To Quite The Party As Hon Mpuuga Mathias’s Saga Takes Another Turn

Led by the charismatic musician-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, NUP has emerged as a formidable player in Ugandan politics. However, recent weeks have witnessed a surge in tension within the party, particularly following a clash with Mathias Mpuuga, the former opposition leader and Member of Parliament for Nyendo-Mukungwe constituency.

Insiders privy to the unfolding saga reveal a web of intricate alliances and betrayals, with Speaker Anita Among, a significant figure in Uganda’s legislative realm, allegedly orchestrating moves to consolidate power in favor of the ruling NRM party led by Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Among, previously associated with the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), is purportedly working towards fostering unity among parliamentarians regardless of their political leanings, thus sowing seeds of discord within NUP.

Notably, several opposition MPs have been spotted in the company of Speaker Among, partaking in private gatherings at her residence while seemingly distancing themselves from events organized by Bobi Wine, the party’s president—a trend that has stirred unease within NUP’s ranks.

The escalating tensions within NUP underscore a broader power struggle within Uganda’s political arena, sparking concerns about the party’s internal coherence and its ability to confront challenges while upholding its status as a significant political force.

In a development as recent as yesterday [March 11th], members of the NUP cabinet publicly aired their grievances against their new leader, Joel Ssenyonyi, citing concerns regarding his approach to party affairs and parliamentary proceedings. This critique unfolded during an emergency meeting of the shadow cabinet presided over by Ssenyonyi.

Detractors within the shadow cabinet branded Ssenyonyi as an “impulsive young man,” prone to making rash decisions without considering the party’s best interests. Speaking on condition of anonymity, one MP expressed frustration, asserting, “He rushes into action without assessing or pondering the repercussions for our fledgling party.”
