Two former prisoners, Sanya Muhydin and Joseph Muganza, have made serious allegations against the National Unity Platform (NUP) and its leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine. They claim that Bobi Wine exploited them during their time as supporters of the party.
Muhydin and Muganza were recently granted a pardon by President Museveni after spending four years in prison. They had been convicted of treason and illegal possession of ammunition following their arrests during the November 2020 protests.
In a candid interview with Sanyuka Television, Sanya Muhydin expressed regret for his involvement in the protests and accused Kyagulanyi of abandoning them after using them for political purposes. He admitted, “We wanted to overthrow the government, and I ask for forgiveness. I now acknowledge that we supported Kyagulanyi, who promised us money to participate in the protests.”
Muhydin further claimed he was promised substantial sums, including up to five million shillings, but never received any of it. He expressed his frustration, saying, “I’ve lost everything I owned because I got involved in something that wasn’t my fight.”
Joseph Muganza also confessed to his role in the protests, including possessing firearms with the intent to overthrow the government. However, he emphasized that he and others did not receive any financial compensation from the government after their release. “We didn’t receive any money, and the only document we signed was in court when we were set free,” he said. Muganza added that they had chosen not to return to NUP because they felt neglected by the party, which allegedly hoped they would remain in prison until 2027.
The two men were part of a group of 19 NUP supporters arrested during the 2020 protests and initially faced serious charges. Although they initially denied the charges, they later accepted a plea deal that resulted in shorter sentences. Last week, they were pardoned by President Museveni.
Muhydin also rejected claims that they were coerced into confessing by the government. He stated that his support for Kyagulanyi had been motivated by a belief in a just cause, and he insisted that there had been no pressure to admit guilt.
