President Museveni has urged members of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to resist having personal conflicts and focus on the party’s core principles of Patriotism, Pan-Africanism, Socio-Economic transformation, and democracy. He emphasized that their ultimate goal should be the betterment of the nation, not personal gain.

The President’s remarks come amidst a clash between Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and Presidential advisor Odrek Rwabwogo. Gen Muhoozi described Rwabwogo as the “biggest thief” in Uganda and questioned why the President would take pictures with his son-in-law. He also accused some ministers of planning the arrest and incarceration of MP Michael Mawanda, a supporter of Gen Muhoozi.

The “Disciples of Odrek Rwabwogo” responded, saying Gen Muhoozi’s remarks were motivated by envy and were a “project of intrigue enforced by an irrational coward suffering from extreme sense of entitlement.” However, Gen Muhoozi insisted that “someone has to deliver us from this nonsense.”

During the meeting, President Museveni emphasized the importance of adhering to the NRM’s mass-line principles, prioritizing the needs and rights of the masses over those of the elite. He highlighted the party’s commitment to inclusive policies such as immunization for all, education for all, prosperity for all, and security for all.

As the country prepares for the 2026 general elections, observers say battlelines are being drawn. Gen Muhoozi has announced his intention to stand for president, and his remarks have sparked a heated debate within the NRM.

The President’s call for unity and focus on the party’s core principles may be seen as an attempt to calm the waters and refocus the party’s attention on its mission. However, the clash between Gen Muhoozi and Rwabwogo has exposed underlying tensions within the party, and it remains to be seen how these will play out in the lead-up to the elections.
