Makerere University celebrated the monumental graduation milestone of Papa Salim, its 84th guild president, who successfully concluded a decade-long academic period spanning 10 years. Amidst the cohort of 212 graduates emerging from the prestigious College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources, and Biosecurity (COVAB), Papa emerged triumphantly with a bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine, a testimony to his unwavering commitment over the extended study period.

Stepping into the role of guild president during the academic year 2017/2018, Papa encountered a myriad of challenges, from the vexing issue of missing marks to the hurdles of academic persistence. Sleeping in the confines of Nsibirwa Hall, also recognized as Northcote Hall, Papa embarked on his university journey in 2013, initially anticipating a graduation ceremony in 2019.

However, his involvement in external entrepreneurial pursuits, notably in the realm of money remittance, diverted his attention while awaiting the momentous day of graduation.Upon graduation, Papa underscored the great role played by persistence and hope in his academic journey, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support received from his dedicated lecturers. Commencing as a government-sponsored student for the initial five years, Papa assumed responsibility for his tuition in the subsequent years, embodying a commendable commitment to his educational pursuit. On the day of his graduation, Papa radiated joy and extended heartfelt congratulations to his fellow graduates, emphasizing the profound significance of traversing the gates of Makerere University.

Acknowledging the initial disappointment of missing out on the anticipated graduation list, he highlighted the resilience required to surmount such formidable challenges.Addressing the institutional policies, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, the known vice-chancellor of Makerere University, clarified the parameters governing the duration of students’ stay. He elaborated on the flexibility allowing students, including Papa, to extend their course duration within specified limits.

Papa’s compliance with the stipulated timeframe, encompassing the statutory program duration plus an additional two years, stood as a testament to his adherence to the university’s regulations.Papa’s ascent to prominence was marked by his and the guild council’s vehement opposition to a proposed tuition fee hike ranging from 45% to a staggering 91%, impacting students enrolling in the university during the 2018/2019 academic year.

Their resolute stance, demonstrated through impassioned protests, resulted in the suspension of the contentious policy, solidifying Papa’s legacy as a defender of student rights. The week-long graduation ceremony, commencing on Monday and set to conclude tomorrow, stands as a grand finale, marking the culmination of academic achievements for numerous students, with Papa Salim at the forefront of this celebratory moment.
