The local organizing committee overseeing Barbara Cecilia Atim Ogwal’s burial has requested Parliament to clarify the allocation of funds designated for the funeral of the late Dokolo woman Member of Parliament.
Ogwal, who succumbed to cancer on January 18 in India, is set to receive an official burial, managed by A-Plus funeral services commissioned by the Executive. In addition to burial proceedings, Parliament has tasked A-Plus with providing meals at Ogwal’s residences in Dokolo District, Lira City, Alito Sub-county in Kole District, and Kampala.
However, the regional organizing committee, led by Lira Resident City Commissioner Lawrence Egole, expressed frustration, claiming they haven’t received any funds from the government.
“We are also economic activists now because our people must also get part of these businesses. The idea that they will be subcontracted to provide meals for Shs5,000 per plate yet A-Plus is most likely charging Shs27,000 to Shs30,000 per plate is unacceptable. Whoever is in charge of this, it is unacceptable,” Okao told Monitor.
Despite expectations of over 20,000 mourners at the burial site in Alito Sub-County, Kole District, the contracted catering service, Yendo Catering Services, anticipates serving only 6,000 mourners and 1,000 VIPs on the specified day.
Amidst concerns, there has been no official statement from A-Plus, Parliament, or the Executive by the time of this report. The situation raises questions about the coordination and communication surrounding the funeral arrangements for the late MP Ogwal.
