The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has recently noted a great improvement in the quality of candidates’ performance in recent examinations. Across various subject areas, examiners have observed an uptick in mean scores, signaling an overall enhancement in candidate aptitude. Notably, the field of Biology has seen significant progress, overcoming historical performance challenges.

Despite these positive developments, the core science subjects still fall short of desired standards. UNEB has previously highlighted several contributing factors in the #UACE2023 results releases. One notable factor is the teaching methodology, which overly emphasizes theory at the expense of practical skills essential for conducting experiments, recording data, and interpreting results effectively.

Candidates have encountered difficulties with practical experience-based questions, underscoring the necessity of integrating practical components into the curriculum. UNEB’s analysis illuminates areas for improvement within the education system, underscoring the importance of a balanced approach that harmonizes theoretical knowledge with practical application.

The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) is a government agency responsible for conducting national examinations in Uganda. Established in 1983, UNEB oversees the administration of primary, secondary, and post-secondary examinations, including the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE), Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE), and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).

UNEB plays a crucial role in ensuring the integrity and credibility of Uganda’s education system by setting standards, developing examination materials, and evaluating student performance. Additionally, UNEB provides valuable data and insights into educational trends and challenges, helping to inform policy and improve the quality of education in the country.
