A taxi driver, Joel Ssenyonga, 40, has been apprehended by police in Luwero town council in connection with the mysterious death of his girlfriend, Jalia Nantaba, 38.

According to John Ojokuna, Luwero District Police Commander, Ssenyonga allegedly hosted Nantaba at his residence on Wednesday night, but she succumbed to unknown circumstances.

Ssenyonga attempted to conceal the incident by seeking assistance from a fellow taxi driver to transport the body and abandon it on the road. However, a conscientious driver alerted the authorities, leading to Ssenyonga’s arrest.

On Thursday, police retrieved the body from Ssenyonga’s residence and transported it to Luwero Hospital for a postmortem examination to determine the cause of death.

During his arrest, Ssenyonga claimed that he picked up Nantaba from a bar in Kiwogozi zone and spent the night with her, but she suddenly fell ill and passed away at around 3:00 am.

Ssenyonga denied any involvement in Nantaba’s death but admitted trying to cover it up due to shock and fear of arrest. A neighbor, Moses Kapo, reported that the body showed no visible injuries or wounds.

Faridah Najjuma, Luwero District Female Councillor, revealed that neighbors witnessed Ssenyonga with his girlfriend, who appeared unwell, before he left the house.

Najjuma urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation, as this is the second incident of its kind in the area.

Relatedly On May 18, 2024, a tragic incident occurred at Kylne Guest House in Luwero town, resulting in the untimely death of Marie Rose Nduwayesu, a 48-year-old Rwandan national.

Her lover, Gerald Byamugisha, had booked a room with her, but their evening together took a deadly turn when a dispute escalated into a fatal confrontation. Byamugisha allegedly employed a cloth to silence Nduwayesu permanently, abandoning her lifeless body in the toilet.

The guest house attendant stumbled upon the gruesome discovery the following morning, after Byamugisha had vacated the premises.

This heartbreaking event contributes to the distressing statistics of Luwero district, which reported an alarming 90 homicides and 534 instances of domestic violence in 2023, surpassing all other districts in the country, as per the Police Crime report.
