In a stunning development last October, a senior university official was apprehended by authorities. Prof. Lawrence Eron, the acting deputy vice-chancellor of Kyambogo University, found himself in a precarious situation as his associates frantically sought to raise a substantial sum to influence the investigation. Eron had people close to him quickly mobilize Shs60m which was meant to bribe the police detectives so as to kill off the case. The case involved a 16-year-old student from a nearby school and was promptly transferred to the Jinja Road Police Station for further investigation.

Eron’s wife, a government employee, became suspicious when she noticed unusual financial transactions in her husband’s account. She confronted him, and from his detention cell, Eron fabricated a story, claiming he was in trouble for a tragic accident. He falsely stated that he needed to make significant payments to the victim’s family and the authorities to avoid severe repercussions.

Despite learning the truth about her husband’s reprehensible actions, Eron’s wife remained steadfast in her support. During a phone call, she expressed concern about the potential consequences of his actions on his career, particularly his pending promotion to a senior leadership position at the university, which was imminent.

Prof. Eron attempted to placate his wife by blaming his colleagues at the Faculty for using witchcraft to sabotage him, leading to his potential job loss. Meanwhile, he was overseeing a lucrative project on Special Needs Education at Kyambogo University, funded by the Dutch government, and heading a committee for Compassion International’s intervention at Kakumba Chapel. He held influential positions at Naguru-based St. Peter’s Church of Uganda and was a member of the Senate and Governing Council.

After his arrest, Prof. Eron secured release on police bond due to ill health, with three colleagues acting as sureties. However, rumors of a Shs60m bribe offer created distrust among investigating officers, leading some to feel sidelined. These disgruntled officers advised the victim’s family and school officials to escalate the matter to the First Lady, warning that the case would otherwise be buried, allowing Prof. Eron to escape accountability.

The Dutch embassy, which had sponsored the Nairobi trip where the assault occurred, was informed, and they, in turn, involved the First Lady, Janet Museveni, who is also the Education Affairs Minister. Her intervention ensured that no one at the Police or CID could compromise the case. She delegated State Minister JC Muyingo to personally follow up on her behalf and assigned the Attorney General, Kiwanuka Kiryowa, to ensure the victim, Aseru, receives justice.

Lango elder Omara led efforts to facilitate dialogue between Dr. Eron’s side and Aseru’s family, with Shs200m available to oil the process. If successful, this would have complicated the DPP’s pursuit of Dr. Eron. The victim’s father initially cooperated, writing to the DPP and university management, retracting his earlier statement implicating Dr. Eron.

However, the Dutch embassy and NUDIPU engaged a high-profile law firm, contradicting the father’s writings and rendering his retraction inconsequential to the prosecution case. The father’s initial cooperation and retraction were seen as a move to shield Dr. Eron, but the law firm’s involvement made this irrelevant. Mzee Omara realized he had been misled about Dr. Eron’s innocence and pulled out of negotiations. The Shs200m was lost, and the process ended.

Kyambogo University conducted an internal inquiry, coordinated by Arthur Katongole, but insiders friendly to Dr. Eron compromised this process. Aseru’s private lawyers deemed this immaterial to the DPP case.Dr. Eron remains on the run, prompting police to arrest his sureties to compel them to produce him. A Shs10m reward is offered for information leading to his arrest, simplifying matters.

He ordinarily lives in Pearl Estates, Sonde, where residents have occasionally seen him buying small groceries and traveling incognito on Boda Boda to avoid detection. He will soon realise that in a country like Uganda, where Police has so much capabilities, you can run but can’t hide. Dr. Eron, who Police spokesman Fred Enanga says is HIV positive, will be facing aggravated defilement charges because the young girl he infected is a PWDs who had been put under his care in the capacity of a guardian.

ERON PROFILE:

But who exactly is Dr. Eron? What is his background like and how did he end up becoming so powerful at Kyambogo to the extent of holding so many responsibilities including being member of Senate, Governing Council and head of the Ceremonies Committee? The very handsome Professor hails from Lango and started out by being a primary school teacher in Apac district.

In August 1989, a defilement incident happened involving a P6 pupil and this resulted into Eron fleeing to Kampala. As of that time, much of Northern Uganda was almost lawless as the nascent NRM government hadn’t yet strongly established itself there. In Kampala, Eron who was a grade 3 teacher, took up residence at a low income close relative’s home in Naguru go down slums.

He subsequently got for himself a security guard job which required him to guard someone’s home in the neighbourhood. While doing that job, an NGO opportunity presented itself and this was an organization (post-NRA war Uganda understandably had a lot of NGOs everywhere) that wanted young men to undergo a two months training to become sign language interpreters.Eron, who was primarily attracted by the nice lunch that was offered during the two months training, enrolled and did very well. In the end, he was offered a certificate of attendance for that course.

He subsequently got a teaching job for himself at Bugonga PS in Entebbe whereafter UNISE at Kyambogo unveiled training opportunities for those wanting to specialise in special needs education provision and that’s how Eron got selected to be among those who travelled to Oslo University in Norway to train in special needs. He stayed away in Norway, where he did a master’s degree in special needs education, for 6 years and immediately joined Kyambogo University upon return.

He endeared himself to Dr. Kimuli Kisolo who was the Director at UNISE and made him Dean of Studies there which was the equivalent of Deputy Director. In 2001, the GoU made a decision to elevate and merge UPK, ITEK and UNISE into Kyambogo University but this move was vigorously resisted by staff at UNISE who had gotten used to a lot of donor money and never wanted to lose their autonomy to the new University.

They eventually cracked and in 2003, UNISE succumbed and became part of Kyambogo University. Kisolo Kimuli became DVC under Prof Lutalo Bbosa and Eron became Dean for Faculty of Special Needs. Later on, the Public Service Ministry was tasked to look into all staff qualifications to see whether they were qualified to teach in the newly established University. Eron was found ineligible because he didn’t have a Bachelor’s degree in the relevant field.

He bowed out a bit and retreated to Nkozi University where he quietly did a Bachelor’s degree in Development Studies and subsequently bounced back at Kyambogo. After sometime, a PhD training opportunity presented itself still at Oslo University in Norway, where Dr. Eron had previously trained from, and he predictably grabbed it with both hands.

And it’s this PhD qualification which strengthened him at the Faculty of Special Needs which previously had existed as UNISE.When Prof Elly Katunguka became Kyambogo University VC, Eron worked hard to win his favors and catch his eye, which he easily succeeded at. That’s how he was quickly fast tracked to become member of Kyambogo University Senate and subsequently the Governing Council.

He also was assigned the role of chairing the Kyambogo Ceremonies Committee which is charged with overseeing the organization of the graduation and other academic ceremonies.

And Kyambogo University knowledgeable sources say that, if this Aseru defilement scandal hadn’t come up, the well-networked and ever smiling flamboyant Dr. Lawrence Eron would end up becoming the substantive DVC Finance & Administration which he would use as a staging ground to seek to become the Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor, taking over from his boss and mentor Elly Katunguka whose departure from the Kyambogo University top job isn’t very far.

But as things stand now, all this will certainly never happen as Prof Eron could end up serving life in prison at the very minimum; if not worse. Defilement is a capital offence and aggravated defilement only makes the whole thing even much more complicated.
