At just 28 years old, Douglas Onyancha had built a successful life, with a loving family and a thriving business. However, his seemingly ordinary life as a taxi driver and family man concealed a darker reality.
Among his friends, Onyancha was notorious for his involvement in a car theft syndicate that operated in Uganda. In an interview with Inooro TV, Onyancha revealed the double life he led, working as a driver by day and a car robber by night.
Born and raised in Kisii County, he targeted victims in the Western region, stealing cars from parking areas or setting traps for motorists driving at night. The syndicate would then transport the stolen vehicles across the porous border to Uganda, where they were dismantled for spare parts and sold at a cheaper price.
Onyancha’s criminal enterprise thrived, with the syndicate exploiting border points in Machakus and Buteba. However, his luck ran out when he was arrested in Nyeri, leading to the uncovering of numerous complaints linked to the syndicate.
He was charged with robbery with violence and sentenced to life in prison at GK prison in Nyeri.
“I indulged in car robberies. My work was to steal cars and sell them in neighboring countries including Uganda. Following my arrest, the police unearthed many complaints linked to the syndicate. I was charged with robbery with violence,” he pointed out.
While serving his sentence, Onyancha was involved in a fatal altercation with another prisoner, resulting in a tragic outcome. However, he claims to have since reformed and is eager to rejoin society.
“I am praying for God to grant me another chance so that I can fend for my family. I am a reformed person and seek to provide a testimony in church. I would also caution those involved in crime to refrain from conducting such activities,” he pointed out.
